Bats Can Have Rabies - Never Touch a Bat!
All Illinois bats are protected under the Wildlife Code (520 ILCS 5/1.1). Bats may not be shot, trapped, transported, or held in confinement except when a bat is found in an area where they may have contact with humans or domestic pets.
If you have known or suspected contact with a bat in your home:
Wash the area thoroughly with soap and water - seek medical if needed
Capture the bat using a cardboard box or blanket (see more here)
Do not damage the bat's head - it will be used to test the bat for rabies
Call 217-245-5111 to report the encounter to the Morgan County Health Department
